There is growing and well documented body of evidence regarding observed changes in the climate system and impact that can be attributed to human-induced climate change. The current observation and experience have shown rises in sea level, melting of glaciers, temperature rise, severe storm and drought.

Climate change is becoming the greatest challenge facing man on Earth in this century. It is a process of global warming, in part attributable to the ‘greenhouse gases’ generate by human activity. The changes in temperature and rainfall patterns have alter plant and animal behavior significantly in the area of agriculture and human’s health.

The impacts of climate change are being felt by both developed country and developing countries. These impacts are likely to be felt more by developing countries not necessarily because they are the highest contributors of climate variation but because they lack economic, social and political infrastructures to respond adequately to the effects of climate change.

Impact of climate change can be seen clearly  in Sokoto state in Northern part of Nigeria, which contain a significant portion of Sudan-Sahel ecological zone of West Africa, since the early 1970s, climate anomalies in the form of recurrent droughts and numerous dust storms. Of course, drought means more than not having access to clean drinking water. Indeed, the climate of this region of Nigeria has become highly unpredictable, making many people to wonder what has happened to their past experience to current condition of climatic excursion.

The concern with climate change is heightened given the linkage of agricultural sector to poverty. In particular, it is anticipated that adverse impacts on the agricultural sector will exacerbate the incidence of rural poverty. Impacts on poverty are likely to be especially severe in Nigeria where the agricultural sector is an important source of livelihood for the majority of the rural population.

Over 80% of Nigeria population depends on the rain-fed agriculture and fishing as their primary occupation leading to high risk of food production system being adversely affected by the variability in timing and amount of rainfall, frequent outbreaks of crop pest and disease and heat stress. If, the trend of the trend of climate change progress and factors the responsible for global warming is not mitigated food shortage will increase and many farmer could lost their sources of livelihood due to climate change.

The IPCC and global community should facilitate sustainable climate change programme that will mitigate the upsurge and catastrophic effect of climate change impact on the developing countries that could hardly feed and take care of her growing population. Clean development mechanism (CDM) programmes should well propagated in the developing world, so that carbon inprint will be reduced globally in the world and the 2 or 4 degree Celsius temperature will not be attained in our world.
